Mental Health Professionals – Who and What

Seeking professional help can be pivotal in maintaining good mental health but there are a lot of different kinds of professionals out there and it might be confusing figuring who should one consult for what purpose. In this article, we'll explore some of the key professionals in this field and their roles in helping individuals navigate their mental health challenges.

  1. Psychiatrist : Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have done there is specialisation (MD) in the study of diagnostics, treatment and prevention of mental illness. They are the only mental health professionals who are qualified to prescribe medication.  
  2. Psychologist : Psychologists have done their Masters or Doctorate in psychology. They are trained to conduct psychological assessment, diagnose  and treat through psychotherapy and counselling. They work with individuals usually but sometimes work with groups also. 
  3. Clinical social workers : Social Workers often have a Master’s degree in social work (MSW). They specialize in providing support to individuals and families facing mental health challenges. They often work in diverse settings, including mental health clinics, hospitals, and schools. 
  4. Counsellors : Counsellors are mental health professionals with masters in psychotherapy and counselling. They work with individuals, couples, and families to address a wide range of concerns, such as stress, grief, self-growth, substance abuse, and relationship issues. Counsellors use various therapeutic approaches to help clients develop coping strategies and improve their emotional well-being.
  5. Alternate therapists : Art/music therapists use art or music to help people with mental health conditions. They typically have a M’asters degree in their field. 

There are non-professionals also who undertake to help  and some of them are caring people with good intentions and can be very supportive. However, many of them either have no qualifications at all or have attended a short workshop. In the absence of professional qualifications it is possible that some of them may do more harm than good. So before reaching out for help, it is important to check on the credentials.
