When an individual is under stress there are clear warning signs that manifest themselves quite early. An alert and observant manager or co-worker could pick up some of these signs, and get them the appropriate help soon, before the problem gets out of hand.
Not all the signs of stress are visible to an outsider, but here is a list of some of those that can be observed or may emerge in conversation with the employee or co-workers. They are more significant if they represent a departure from the person’s normal behavior.
Social and Behavioural
- Changes in attendance such as absenteeism or arriving late
- Lowered performance, more errors
- Working unusually long hours
- Changes in eating habits
- Substance abuse (cigarettes, alcohol, drugs)
- Increased conflicts with co-workers, supervisors, clients
- Unrealistic demands on self and others
- Withdrawal from social activity
- Workplace violence or road rage
Physical
- Complaints of neck, shoulder or back pain, headaches
- Increased susceptibility to illness – colds, flu, infections
- Complaints of chest pain, breathlessness, irregular heartbeat
- Tiredness, lethargy
- Falling asleep at work
- Nervous twitches
Cognitive and Emotional
- Emotional outbursts – tearful, aggressive or sensitive
- Appearing sad and depressed
- Loss of motivation and interest
- Confusion and forgetfulness
- Difficulty in making decisions
- Changes in attitude and mood
- Inability to concentrate
- Over-reactions
Please note that these symptoms could also be caused by other factors besides stress. However the presence of several of the above signs, is indicative of a problem. Express concern in a one-on-one conversation, and if the person indicates that they are going through a problem this will give you the opportunity to see whether there is something you can do about it, or refer them for counselling if appropriate. Your intervention could make all the difference.
In case you are unsure of how to handle the situation, consult a counsellor.
