How to cope with suicidal thoughts

What you can do

If you yourself are feeling suicidal or depressed:
  • Promise not to harm yourself for now. Tell yourself that you will wait at least 24 hours before you act
  • Don’t drink alcohol or take drugs – that will only make it worse.
  • Don’t remain alone. Call someone whom you trust - a family member, friend, colleague, or manager. Ask them to come and stay with you or you go to where they are.
  • Ask for what you need - help to meet a doctor, someone to stay for the night or get you a meal? Having practical help and a companion when you are distressed will help you feel stronger to take the next step.
  • Talk to a counsellor. Your EAP counsellors are trained, competent and non-judgemental. They will not only help you through this difficult time, but equip you with skills to cope more effectively in the future.
